Retrofitting and Renovation of Heritage Buildings by Carbon Fiber

The main structure of the building is well preserved, but due to severe additions and a long history, the exterior facade and internal facilities of the building have become dilapidated and unstable.

The three historical buildings in Lanyuan were all built in the 1930s and 1940s. The main structure of the building is well preserved, but due to severe additions and a long history, the exterior facade and internal facilities of the building have become dilapidated and unstable.

In response to this situation, the Cultural and Tourism Bureau quickly organized on-site surveying and temporary maintenance work. In June 2022, the design work for the historical building of Lanyuan was officially launched. In order to meet the requirements of modern living, the principle of "repairing the old to use the new" was adhered to. After multiple discussions on design schemes, the layout was deepened, and expert consultation meetings were held to strive for excellence in details and revitalize the building.

In March 2023, the Lanyuan project was officially launched, with a total renovation area of 1555 square meters.

Lanyuan Historical Building Restoration Project - Reinforcement

From the overall appearance of the building facade to the internal spatial structure, comprehensive protection and revitalization are carried out. On the basis of preserving urban memory and reducing building functions, the style and structure of traditional architecture of the Republic of China are followed, and the unity of protection and renewal is well done. While reinforcing the load-bearing components such as the foundation structure, walls, floors, and roof trusses, processes and materials that meet the characteristics of the current era are selected. The basic part is mainly reinforced by adding reinforced concrete ground beams, and the original foundation is interlocked with the newly added reinforced concrete ground beams through the use of pin keys, thus forming a complete stress system.

The wall is reinforced with steel mesh, polymer mortar, steel wrapping, and additional structural columns. After planting steel bars on the original wall foundation and tying steel mesh sheets, high-strength polymer mortar is used for painting.

The original roof truss was reinforced using methods such as steel wrapping and carbon fiber. For wooden roof trusses, we first spray anti termite, anti-corrosion paint, and fireproof coating for protection. Steel reinforcement is carried out at the stress nodes, and ultimately the entire roof truss is wrapped in carbon fiber.

During the construction of floor reinforcement and repair, conduct on-site inspections first. Replace the warped, decayed, and loose keel. The remaining well preserved keels are reinforced with carbon fiber. Add angle steel support at the lower end of the keel after reinforcement to improve bearing capacity and stability
